Location: Puerto Varas is a city located in the Provincia de Llanquihue, Region de los Lagos, at the shore of the Llanquihue Lake, one of the largest natural lakes in South America. Puerto Varas is about 20km (12mi) from Puerto Montt, the capital of Region de los Lagos. Weather: Spring in Puerto Varas is between September to November, and although there is more likelihood of rainy weather, this climate produces the evergreen forest lakes. Spring produces intense rains but short duration. The average daytime temperature in September goes from 4°C to 18°C.
Chile’s International Airport (Arturo Merino Benitez, Santiago, SCL) is located about 1023 km (635 mi) from Puerto Varas. There are two main ways to get to Puerto Varas from Santiago. Please allow ample time so you won't run into any problems!
Two carriers can get you to Puerto Montt: Lan (www.lan.cl) and Sky (www.skyairline.cl), both have frequently scheduled flights operating from Santiago to Puerto Montt. This flight takes approximately 2 hours. Puerto Montt is located 21 km (13 mi) from Puerto Varas.
From Puerto Montt’s Airport you can take a taxi to Puerto Varas, which approximately costs $16.000 CLP (US$32) and takes 25 minutes.
Most accommodations also have a transfer service that you can arrange when booking your room (http://www.turistour.cl/tour/en/excursions/lakes-and-volcanoes/traslados-aeropuerto-puerto-montt-detail?limitstart=0&limit=int). Another viable, but not recommended option, is taking a city bus to Puerto Montt’s bus terminal for $1500 CLP (US$ 3), and then taking a bus to Puerto Varas for $800 CLP (US$ 2). The trip by bus takes approximately 1 hour. Please notice that the last bus from Puerto Montt to Puerto Varas is around 10:00 pm.
Once you arrive to Chile's International Airport (SCL) you can take a taxi for $12000 CLP (US$24) or a bus (Turbus) for $1500 CLP (US$ 3) to "Terminal de Buses Alameda". From there you can take a bus directly to Puerto Varas from a bus company (Turbus, Buses JAC, Pullman Bus, Bus Norte, Cruz del Sur, Linea Azul, etc). Prices can vary from $15.000 to $50.000 CLP (US$ 30-100), depending on the type of seat that you choose and how far in advance you buy your ticket. Only one bus agency allows you to buy your tickets on-line (www.turbus.cl). This trip can take about 16-18 hours and is normally scheduled two or three times a day. Another option is taking the bus straight to Puerto Montt, and from there take a bus to Puerto Varas for $800 CLP (US$ 2).
